Léon Frey Geovisuals

Explanatory Videos
For several years, I have been producing geoscientific explanatory videos for various lectures at the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences at ETH Zurich, as well as for focusTerra, the Earth & Science Discovery Center at ETH Zurich. Most of the videos are available online on YouTube.
Be it for education, exhibitions, or digital media – I create tailor-made explanatory videos that make your content clear and engaging.

Magmatism and Metamorphism I
In 2024, I produced a video series together with Prof. Dr. Olivier Bachmann for the ETH lecture “Magmatismus und Metamorphose I”.
For this project, I traveled with camera and drone to impressive outcrops in the Alps, the Aleutian Islands (Alaska), Iceland, and Antarctica. The goal was to make magmatic processes understandable and tangible through spectacular field recordings.
The videos were supplemented by explanatory sequences with graphics and models, recorded directly at ETH Zurich – a multimedia teaching tool that didactically combines theory and practice in the field.
Geology of Switzerland
In 2023, I produced a video series for the ETH lecture “Geologie der Schweiz” together with Dr. Iwan Stössel.
For this, we traveled with camera and drone to various geologically particularly exciting and spectacular locations in Switzerland. The videos show specific examples in the field and complement each lecture unit with relevant field examples.
In some videos, I explain the geology directly on site myself; in others, I can be seen in conversation with Dr. Iwan Stössel – always with the aim of conveying the content of the lecture in a tangible and vivid way.

Dynamic Earth I
For the lecture “Dynamische Erde I” I created videos on the topics of minerals, magmatism, and metamorphism in collaboration with Prof. Dr. Olivier Bachmann.
In the videos, I explain the basics of each lecture topic. Students watch the videos as preparation for the lecture units at their own pace. The in-person lecture then builds on the fundamentals of the videos in a "flipped classroom" format.
For the videos, I filmed both at ETH and in the field with camera and drone. This was my first video project of this kind, and the overwhelmingly positive feedback from students motivated me to pursue further projects.
Students talk
In addition to scientific explanatory videos, I also create customized video productions – for example, promotional videos for the Bachelor’s program in Earth and Climate Sciences at ETH Zurich.
In these videos, students share firsthand accounts of their studies, their everyday lives, and their enthusiasm for geosciences. The goal is to connect with potential students on an emotional level and provide them with authentic insights – so that they ultimately decide to pursue this exciting Bachelor's program.
Here is an example video from this series.
